Instructions for making your own crickler from this template

These instructions are specifically for Microsoft Word - but apply to all HTML editors. No knowledge of HTML is required to make your own crickler. This what you need to do:

Step 1. Edit the questions and answers below these instructions.

Step 2. Save your edited crickler file. When you open/refresh your saved file in IE5 you will see your modified puzzle (without these instructions).  It's that easy.

All you need know is how to edit a Word file and save it!  When editing a crickler there are a few things to bear in mind:

  1. Answers must be enclosed in square brackets (see the example below). The font size you use sets the size of the squares in the puzzle.
  2. You need to include line breaks at the end of each line. This is because lines containing answers do not 'flow' like HTML text.
  3. Any crickler can act as a template - so start with this one or one that is closer to the style you want.  Edit the existing questions and answers, replacing them with your own.
  4. This is just an HTML file so you can do just about anything you can do in an HTML file - change colors, fonts, add pictures, links, sounds, movies, JAVA applets, banner ads, page counters, mow the lawn, whatever.  You can save your crickler file to your hard drive, post it to the web, email it, zip it. It's just an HTML file.
  5. Characters you can use:
    •  Answers can be in Upper or Lower case and may include accented European characters. All forms of a character match when the puzzle is played.
    •  Answers can include numbers and symbols.
    •  Spaces and symbols (e.g. punctuation) appear as 'fixed' characters that are present when the crickler opens.
    •  If you underline a letter or number, it becomes fixed but if you underline a special character or a space it becomes an 'active' character that the player has to enter.
  6. Settings:

    Player can SOLVE
    the crickler only after:

       Active (e.g. 20 mins)
    Elapsed (e.g. 20 hours)

    Values allowed: 0 - 99

    Set the Linkage Level
    Average links/letter x 10

    Standard  (e.g. 8)
      More Links (e.g. 20)

    Values allowed: 0 - 99
Background color of this table sets the tile color - 'white' is recommended
Set the SOLVE time(s) to Zero if you want the SOLVE button to work always. You might want to add a note to your puzzle telling players how long thay need to wait before they can SOLVE.
  7. For your crickler to run correctly, there are a few things you should not do:
    •  Do not alter or erase these instructions. They will not show when your crickler is played.
    •  Do not alter the Control Panel.
    •  Do not alter the 'magic' code line starting with the words incantation = 'abracadabra'.
  8. In return for your free use of this neat tool, we require that you follow the rules above and not alter the code or these instructions.  If you follow these rules, you have our full permission to use this tool, use the name "crickler", and post your crickler on the web - all without charge. If this crickler does not precisely suit your needs please contact us at mica@crick.com or call 425-883-2876 (9-9 Pacific Time) to discuss a customized version.

Send us a link to your crickler(s) or email them to us atmica@crick.com so we may add them to our crickler index at crickler.com.  Happy Cricklering!
